Ah, Vancouver. There is no place quite like it anywhere in the world. One of
the last strongholds of serious socialists, the city also houses some of the
most successful capitalists in the Western Hemisphere. Mothers who would quake
at the thought of putting anything other than organic baby skincare products
on their infants live next door to families who redefine the word overconsumption.
It rains for two thirds of the year, but on those sunny days there is nowhere
quite like it on Earth.
Aside from the great mix of people and the beauty of the city itself, there
are many great reasons to live in Vancouver. There is always something to do
in this, the third largest city in Canada and the largest west of Toronto. There
is a large enough market that almost any company with a sound plan can do well,
from a steel mill to a food PR agency. And, of course, there's easy access
to the rest of British Columbia, a place offering a plethora of options to any
type of tourist.
There's no doubt that living in Vancouver is a great option for those
interested in a big city lifestyle, but where is the best place in the city
to live?
Well, that will first depend on your definition of what a suburb is. Vancouver
itself is comprised of 21 different incorporated municipalities, all of which
would stand on their own as cities anywhere else in the province. Let's
take a look at some of these cities, comparing some common characteristics of
each.
West Vancouver
West Vancouver is the area of the city which immediately borders the Pacific
Ocean. As you might expect, this entire area is dotted with very high end homes
which come with very high price tags. It's perfect for the person who
likes to dip their sailboat keel every weekend, with many ports and yachting
clubs throughout the suburb. There tends to be quite a bit of tension in several
areas between residents and industry and the provincial government, as the major
BC Ferries terminals and international ports are located along the coast line.
Vancouver
Metro Vancouver has the highest population of any of the cities which make
up Vancouver. It's fun, it's expensive, and it's gorgeous.
If you thought prices for Oakville real estate were high, you will have to
pinch yourself when you take a look at the prices homes in Vancouver are fetching.
It also includes some areas of high crime and worse traffic.
Burnaby
Burnaby is to the immediate east of Vancouver, and is the third largest municipality
in the province. Residential development in Burnaby has been heavy, but there
are several businesses in operation as well as some industry. In fact it might
be the ideal place to locate a Canadian trade mark firm, thanks to lower rents
and good access.
Surrey
Surrey is the second most populated part of the Vancouver area. For years,
crime has been a problem in Surrey as racial tensions and Old World rivalries
continue despite police efforts to curb it. Still, compared to many other big
city suburbs, Surrey is quite safe.
